The History of ROBERT E. LEE SCHOOL |
![]()
| Suzanne Looney Richter ('60) and I will provide you with a
correct as possible history of Lee School. There are some incorrect "facts" out
there and we are trying to be careful not to perpetuate or add to the mis-information. The
history of the site is practically as long as that of Paris itself. The site was dedicated to education in 1825, when a covenant signed by around 60 prominent men in town obligated them to pay a pledge over a three year period to establish a Male Academy. We do not even know the exact year it was named for Robert E. Lee, but our best guess in 1906 (but I get ahead of myself.) Today it is becoming a wonderful Arts Academy. It is the in-between stuff that we need to work on just a little, but we will get it to you soon. We will tell you about mustering the confederate troops on the schoolhouse lawn
in 1861 and other interesting things in our history. |
A history of the history Some time ago classmate Bill Johnson ('52) e-mailed the Grove
site inquiring about a history of the Robert E. Lee School. Figuring that Bobbie Hedges
Parker ('49) had the contacts to provide the information we asked her to help out. Suzanne
Looney Richter ('60 ) and Ray Harding ('59) agreed to provide the information. |
