| JOHN VERNON WADDY passed
away peacefully on August 7, 2009 after battling cancer. Though he is in a better place now, he will be greatly missed by his friends and family. Vernon was born on October 13, 1927 in Paris, Tennessee. He is preceded in death by his parents, Vayden Porter Waddy and Love Brandon Waddy; his brother, Vayden Porter Waddy, Jr.; and son-in-law, Johnny Powell. He is survived by his wife, Margaret Cooper Waddy; and three children, Charlotte Waddy Powell (Johnny Powell), John Vernon Waddy, Jr., and Janet Waddy Rogers (Reed Rogers); and three grandchildren, Drew Powell, Brooks Powell and Will Rogers. Vernon was a veteran of World War II. He worked for Stockham Valves and Fittings for most of his career and was responsible for starting Aliceville Casting Company. His eloquent and entertaining speaking ability was always enjoyed by his audiences, especially when he served as Stockham's Toastmaster Club President and Director. Vernon served in many organizational roles, including the chairman and director of the National Foundry Club, the American Foundrymen's Society, Finance Chairman at Canterbury Methodist Church, President of the Aliceville Rotary Club, and President of the Aliceville Country Club. Vernon was inducted into two basketball sports halls of fame, Birmingham Southern College, where he held the single game scoring record for over 30 years after he graduated, and the Paris-Henry County sports hall of fame in Paris, Tennessee. He was an avid golfer. Visitation will be held on Monday, August 10, 2009 at 2:00 pm at Currie-Jefferson Funeral Home, Hwy 150, Hoover, with funeral service to follow at 3:00 pm in the funeral home chapel. Interment will be in Jefferson Memorial Gardens, South. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Cancer Society in his honor. | Vernon Waddy Published: Tuesday, August 11, 2009 11:55 AM CDT The funeral service for Henry County native John Vernon Waddy of Birmingham, Ala., was conducted at 3 p.m. Monday at Currie-Jefferson Funeral Home in Hoover, Ala. The Rev. Greg Foust officiated. Burial followed in Jefferson Memorial Gardens South in Birmingham. Visitation was Monday. Waddy, 81, died Friday, Aug. 7, 2009, after a battle with cancer. His wife Margaret Cooper Waddy, survives. Born Oct. 13, 1927, in Paris, he was a son of the late Vayden Porter Waddy and Love Brandon Waddy. Waddy was a Grove High School graduate. He was inducted into the Paris-Henry County Sports Hall of Fame in 1996 and the Birmingham-Southern College Sports Hall of Fame in 1992. Waddy worked for Stockham Valves and Fittings and was a World War II veteran. He also leaves three children: Charlotte Waddy Powell, John Vernon Waddy Jr., and Janet Waddy (Reed) Rogers; and three grandchildren: Drew and Brooks Powell and Will Rogers. He also was preceded in death by a brother: Vayden Porter Waddy Jr.; and a son-in-law: Johnny Powell. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society. |
