Mary Agnes Turner Bailey ~ Obituary

Henry County native Mary Agnes Turner Bailey, 97, of Atlanta died peacefully on July 22, 2010, of congestive heart failure.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, George B. Bailey Jr.

Born in Paris on Jan. 21, 1913, she lived at 509 N. Poplar St. with her mother, Agnes Travis Turner, her father Will Arnett Turner and her sister, Emy Louise Turner Landon, all of whom are deceased.

She attended E.W. Grove High School and Randolph-Macon Woman’s College, graduating from Murray State University in 1934 with a degree in mathematics. Until her marriage in 1942, she taught school in Henry and later in Paris at Grove High School.

She and her husband met in the choir at First United Methodist Church of Paris, where they were married. During her lifetime, she lived in many cities, including Detroit, Atlanta, Dayton, Chicago, Dallas and Arlington, Va.

Wherever she lived the Methodist Church was an important part of her life, especially the Woman’s Circle and the choir.

Although she felt her greatest responsibility was the nurture and care of her family, she supported her community in many volunteer positions. She was a Girl Scout leader, an alumni representative to Murray State University and an organizer of her 50th high school reunion among other activities.

Always a student of nature, her favorite hobbies included reading, camping, wildflower walks and bird watching.

She resumed her teaching career when her daughter, Susan R. Bailey, left home for college. Upon retirement, she and her husband returned to Paris, where they lived on Hillcrest Circle.

She is survived by her daughter; her son-in-law, E. Lloyd Dunn; and two grandchildren, Travis Bailey Dunn and Britt Bailey Dunn.

A memorial service will be held in Paris at a time and date to be announced.
